Not All Data Risk Assessments are Created Equal: Point-in-Time or Side-Scanning versus In-Memory Scanning

Sensitive Data, including PII, is at risk of being exposed, compromised and eventually leaked based on many different challenges, such as misconfigurations, extraneous data copies, unexpected access, lack of encryption, etc. While Borneo offers the only solution focused on automatically remediating data risks, fast and accurate discovery and scanning of the data for any exposures is critical in understanding risk and taking steps to eliminate them.

However, many data security solutions attempt to identify where and how sensitive data is accessed using point-time-assessments, that often only look at just meta-data instead of a deeper level of real-time scanning of data. The other method has typically what is called side-scanning, where the user manual decides what resources could contain sensitive data and request a solution to first, make a copy of the data on some sort of temporary storage, and scan that stored data at its leisure.

Borneo offers the first data security solution, the Borneo Data Risk Remediation (DRR) platform, that is capable of deep scanning, going beyond just meta-data, inline, without needing to make copies. This requires our software to perform at high-performance, moreover, with increased accuracy as well. As a DRR, built by practitioners for practitioners, these are critical differentiators the Borneo team has built in order enable autonomous data discovery and classification, assess exposure of sensitive data, including unstructured data, and data-in-motion, and take highly accurate and timely remediation actions to eliminate data risks.

Below, we are cover the various ways Borneo’s inline scanning benefits our customers significantly over other current solutions.

Active inline scanning is generally a better approach for data discovery and classification compared to side-scanning due to several key advantages:

In summary, active In-Memory Scanning is more efficient, cost-effective, and scalable than side-scanning, with added benefits in real-time security and compliance enforcement. Unfortunately, we have seen other vendors claim real-time scanning, but then still perform side-scanning all the same.

Borneo is the only data security solution that has innovated to offer an active in-memory scanning engine to drastically improve the performance and accuracy in determining data risks, but also to provide precise workflows and remediation steps, that you can feel confidence in automating. This provides an almost effortless path to achieving continuous compliance when it comes to protecting data.
